Brief Life Story
Karl Jacob Vella was born on the 6th May 1976. He was a kind man filled with positive energy. He loved life and made it a point to make every moment count. When Karl left school he tried many jobs but settled as a Nursing Aide in a paediatric ward. He loved children and it had become the purpose of his life to help his sick patients and make their stay in hospital as pleasant as possible. He used anything he could find to bring a smile to the young children's faces.
Being a kind and caring man he had strong principles for what is right and as a result of this, he became a union representative in order to be able to voice the concerns of his fellow Nursing Aides in the hospital. He enjoyed helping in any way he could and would not tolerate injustice of any kind. Karl married in 2002 and had two children. They were the apple of his eye and family was always the most important element in his life.
Positivity In The Face Of Illness
When he was diagnosed with cancer in 2008, life became more important to him than ever before. Besides using his positivity to battle his illness, he made it his aim in life to help others in any way he could. He offered his support to sick people in hospital by visiting them, calling them or simply sending an sms with words of encouragement. He had an endless list of facebook friends with whom he would chat with on his housebound days, inspiring them with his words of wisdom and encouragement. He'd also ask these same friends for prayers which helped him to feel stronger.
It was also Karl's joy to support foundations such as Puttinu Cares, Istrina, Hospice and id-Dar tal-Providenza. He also helped the Mission Fund; he couldn't bear the thought that there were people suffering hunger and poverty in other parts of the world because of war or other social disasters. Karl tapped a special strength by helping such institutions collect funds. He always felt that others were more needy than himself.
Prayer was also a very important part of Karl's life. He prayed himself and encouraged others to pray also, both for himself and for their own needs too, but most especially Karl encouraged prayers for peace. It used to upset him that innocent people were suffering because of war.At the beginning of his illness Karl took up photography. It gave him much pleasure to relax in the countryside with his camera or to appreciate the architecture and wealth of the historic inheritance left by our ancestors. Photography helped him to capture the moment and instilled in him a deep appreciation for the beauty around us.
Karl was a man filled with courage and he left a mark on the lives of all those whom he touched. He had so many plans and dreams for his future which he will never be able to fulfill because God called him home on the 16th February 2014 at the age of 37.
Nonetheless, his legacy now lives on through the Foundation, which aspires to continue with his generous spirit through its mission ‘to provide educational and psychological support to children in families disrupted by illness’.
